Wasted prototypes

While prototyping another thing which I'm not sure will fly or not, I'm having flashbacks to similar experiences that resulted in nothing.

  • Reconstruction of piping for plants (conference talk published).

  • Volume decomposition of solid features based on OpenCascade's Booleans (conference talk published).

  • Automatic reverse engineering of curved surfaces with predominantly quad topology (conference talk published).

  • Surface skinning with smoothing for turbine blade reconstruction (conference talk published).

  • Reconstruction of prosthesis for leg limbs.

  • SQLite-based and MongoDB-based alternatives for XDE-based assemblies.

  • Curve-curve intersection in 3D (blog published).

  • Naive bend sequence simulation for sheet metals.

  • Distance-field based Booleans for milling simulation.

  • ... others and others which I could not recall.

Have you ever reflected about those of your algorithms that never saw the light of day? Of course, they had a different goal of teaching you something, and this sole fact makes this whole thing more sweet than bitter, but still. And how many algorithms have never been started at all, and remained your false promise?
